The column is a vertical architectural piece not only to support the weight of the structure, but also for decorative purposes.
They were commonly formed by three elements: base of the column, shaft and capital.
The different orders are recognized and distinguished fundamentally by the shape of the column, and more specifically by that of its capital. The Greeks only used three orders: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. The Romans assumed the Greek orders and transformed them, making their own version, at the same time adding two more: Tuscan and composite.
