In ancient Greece, the gorgoneion was an apotropaic amulet (magical defense mechanism to ward off evil or protect itself from it).

Induced the horror by showing the head of the Gorgon Medusa. It was related to Zeus and Athena, as it was said that they both wore an earring with this motif and their Aegis shield.

Each earring is composed of two bodies. The upper one is a disc or molded circular piece in which a thin sheet is welded with the representation of a Gorgona Medusa. This embossed sheet is probably welded to the disc by interdiffusion technique. The decorative motif shows the essential characteristics of the Gorgon: troubled hair, penetrating gaze, open mouth and snakes coming out of its neck.

The lower part is a conical inverted and elongated pendant whose final vertex is a spherical ball.

The original piece is exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid.
